Dayton v University Tip Off

Dayton v University Tip Off

In one of the most talked-about games this season, the Jonathan Dayton High School Boys Basketball team played aggressively against Newark’s University in the playoffs to come out on top Tuesday night.  Last year, University Phoenix beat the Bulldogs in overtime, 71-64.  In 2011, Dayton won 51-50 against University. This year, the game came down to the wire again except the Bulldogs were victorious, 63-58.

Dayton advanced in the section after defeating Dunnellen on Saturday, March 2, 2013 in the North 2, Group 1 semi-finals.  Spirits were high and the excitement could be felt throughout town.  Tickets went on sale on Monday and sold out in about an hour and a half.  The lines to enter for the home game were wrapped around the gymnasium outside when doors opened at 6 p.m.  In addition to the crowd numbering over 480, a live feed was set up in the cafeteria for non-ticket holders and the game was broadcast online to almost 250 viewers at one point.

The crowd was wild before the tip-off and could be heard outside chanting “Let’s Go Bulldogs!”  The Bulldogs scored first and started with fierce determination.  Despite a number of turn-overs, Dayton managed to lead by four points at the half thanks to a three-point shot by Jared Clayton.  It got tense when University tied the game 52-52 with less than 5 minutes left and then again at 58 with about a minute left.  Dayton held on at the end and scored five more points to win the game and the Section Championship title.

On Thursday, the Dayton Bulldogs will face the Waldwick Warriors at East Orange Campus High School at 5 p.m. for the State Semifinals.   Waldwick defeated Wood-ridge, 68-50, in the North 1, Group 1 championship game tonight.
