Fans from across the state filled the arena at the Louis Brown Athletic Center to watch the Group 1 State Finals championship game between the Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs and the Point Pleasant Beach Garnett Gulls.  Over 300 supporters came to cheer on the Bulldogs for a victory that could have earned them the Group 1 title.  However, Dayton fell short and the season came to an end Sunday night after they lost to Point Pleasant Beach, 43-39.

For most of the game, the Bulldogs and Garnett Gulls were neck and neck with a difference of no more than three points at any given moment until the fourth quarter.  However, Point Pleasant Beach took the lead early on and Dayton worked hard to stay close.  The first half ended with Point Pleasant Beach up 20-17.

Dayton had a better third quarter and trailed Point Pleasant Beach by a point, 26-25.  A few fans noted that the Bulldogs just weren’t themselves and weren’t at their best.  While that may have been the case, both teams missed many shots.

The last quarter of the game had the most action.  With about a minute left, the score was 37-33.  The fourth quarter was filled with fouls on both teams.  Three fouls by Dayton at the end gave Point Pleasant Beach the opportunity to widen the gap but in the last 25 seconds, the Bulldogs scored six more points.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and the frustration could be seen in the expressions of the players and the fans.  Nevertheless, the Dayton Bulldogs and Coach Martin had an outstanding season with a 22-6 record.
