In a release posted on the Springfield Republican Committee website, the local political party announced their two candidates for the 2013 Township Committee election.  According to the post, Jerry Fernandez and Diane Stampoulos will run as a team for the two seats currently occupied by two Democrats.  The announcement was made on Thursday, March 28th by Republican Chairman Harold Poltrock and Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady at local frozen yogurt shop Yo Addiction!.  For about a week, Shehady teased residents on Facebook with an invitation to a “surprise announcement”.  Many guessed it had something to do with the election but there was uncertainty about Fernandez intentions following a narrow defeat as a result of a presidential election.

Fernandez is a popular figure and many residents were surprised to hear about his loss in the 2012 election.  He owns the Spanish Pavillion restaurant and served a term on the Township Committee that included a year as Deputy Mayor.  Stampoulos, a mother of two and a member of the Board of Adjustment, is the first female Township Committee candidate to run on the Republican ticket since 2006.  Her LinkedIn profile indicates she is a Licensed Title Producer and graduate of Seton Hall University.

According to the New Jersey Division of Elections, the party nominating petition filing deadline is 4 p.m., April 1, 2013.  No announcement has been made by the Springfield Democratic Party about their candidates.  The party has been focusing on responding to controversy surrounding Mayor David Amlen’s appointments and newly-elected Committeeman David Barnett’s undisclosed federal fraud charges.
