The first quarter of 2013 was a roller coaster ride for the Springfield Free Public Library but the coming weeks will see stability as Dale Spindel begins her employment in Springfield as the new Library Director.  Spindel brings years of professional experience with her to Springfield.  She worked as a reference librarian at the Library of the Chathams and Jersey City Public Library.  She also worked in the medical library field at Jersey City Medical Center, East Orange General Hospital and Matheny School and Hospital.  Previously the Library Director at Clark Public Library, she comes to Springfield from the Kenilworth Public Library where she was Library Director as well.  Spindel has an undergraduate degree in music theory from The George Washington University, a graduate degree in music history and theory from Rutgers University, and a Master of Library Science from Rutgers University.

Former Library Director Susan Permahos surprised the community in January when the Summit Free Public Library Board of Trustees announced they had named her as the new director effective March 4, 2013.  The position was not vacant for long.  Ann Roman was selected as the interim director until a permanent selection could be made.  The last meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Springfield Free Public Library was on Thursday, March 21, 2013.

Before leaving, Permahos was making nearly $102,000 a year as the Director of the library.  Spindel’s 2011 base salary in Kenilworth was $78,408.  She is expected to begin in Springfield around April 15th.  In a statement to Springfielder.com, Spindel said, “I look forward to coming to Springfield and working with the Board of Trustees and staff members to continue the tradition of excellence that this community has come to expect from its library.  I want to encourage library patrons to stop by and introduce themselves to me so I can learn what it is that makes the library important to them.  I am very excited about the possibilities that the future holds for us.”
