Around 5 a.m. on Thursday, more than a dozen residents were woken up by quite a disturbance that included bright police lights, a lengthy vehicle and foot chase and a crash.  Springfield Police Department sources indicate three young men were involved in the pursuit that started on Henshaw Avenue with the burglary of a Honda CRV.  The vehicle was parked in a driveway but unlocked.  The resident called the Police Department to report the activity outside and the missing vehicle.  It was spotted at a red light and a chase ensued through a number of residential neighborhoods around Hillside Avenue.  The vehicle chase ended near the intersection of Hillside Avenue and South Springfield Avenue after the driver collided with a patrol car.  The SUV ended up on a lawn on South Springfield Avenue near Benjamin Drive.  The three passengers escaped starting a foot pursuit that included several neighboring police departments and County law enforcement.  Two were captured on New Brook Lane and have been identified to be from Irvington. The third man escaped to Route 22 but he has since been identified.

A variety of charges have been filed against the suspects, who are also suspected of a past burglary of another vehicle.  Countless stolen items were recovered linking the men to a series of thefts from other vehicles in Springfield and Mountainside.  Police are investigating whether this incident is connected to break-ins reported on Salter Street and Rose Avenue a few weeks ago.  Some residents reported being visited by Police who urged them to check their vehicles and reminded them to keep them locked.  The melee resulted in damage to residential properties, mailboxes, a fire hydrant and two police vehicles.  No serious injuries were reported and the police officers have returned to duty.
