A Union County-wide “National Night Out” event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6 at 6 p.m. at Meisel Avenue Park in Springfield.  The evening is billed as free and family friendly and it is open to the general public.

Children and families can enjoy free inflatable activity rides, magic, balloon art, bubble mania, bingo, crafts, and music, along with free hotdogs.  There will also be live demonstrations by Union County’s Bomb Squad, SWAT team, and K-9 Unit.  There will be a hands-on exhibit of two dozen police and emergency vehicles.

At dusk (around 8:45 p.m.), visitors will get to screen a free outdoor movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, while snacking on free popcorn.

National Night Out, or “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, started in 1984 and celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year.  The program is organized by the National Association of Town Watch and began as “an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”
