Springfield Athletic Turf Field

Springfield Athletic Turf Field

The highly anticipated celebration of the completion and opening of the Athletic Turf Field will take place this Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. just before the first evening home football game of the Bulldogs.  The event has been listed on the Springfielder.com Community Calendar.  The Bulldogs will be playing the Mountaineers of Bernards High School at 7:00 p.m.  The event is hosted by the Springfield Public Schools, who were given the lead on the construction of the project.  Speakers will include Superintendent Michael Davino, Jonathan Dayton High School Principal Elizabeth Cresci, and Township of Springfield Assistant Engineer Sam Mardini.

Construction started last fall after a bond ordinance spearheaded by Republicans was finally approved in February 2012. Under the leadership of former Mayor Ziad Andrew Shehady and former Deputy Mayor Jerry Fernandez, the project gained traction in the form of an agreement between the Township Committee and Board of Education. Despite opposition by members of the Democratic party and repeated attempts by current Mayor David Amlen and Deputy Mayor Richard Huber to block the project, public support for the project ultimately prevailed. However, current Mayor David Amlen and Deputy Mayor Richard Huber, also candidates for re-election this November, have expressed regret about the process and created an ad hoc investigation committee that is probing the agreement. The investigation has been criticized as a “political witch-hunt” with no goal. Some have pointed out its lack of authority or clear focus and questioned why Amlen is wasting taxpayer money on a unnecessary investigation.  The project is considered to have been completed and was turned over by the contractors last week.  On August 19, 2013, the evening lights were tested and members of the Board of Education toured the grounds of the facility.
