Ceremony & Game Rained Out

An unprecedented crowd turned out for Thursday’s athletic turf field opening ceremony and ribbon cutting and the Bulldogs home opener against the Mountaineers from Bernards.  Unfortunately, around 6:20 p.m. the sky quickly turned gray and clouds gave way to rain.  Shortly after, thunder and lighting could be seen above.  The formalities were scheduled for 6:30 p.m. but for safety reasons, an announcement came over the loud speakers instructing the crowds to leave the stands and head into the school to shelter from the storm.  By 6:50 p.m., it was obvious to many that the weather would not cooperate and the hundreds of spectators rushed to their vehicles.

Springfielder.com was the first to report that the game would be rescheduled for tomorrow, Friday, September 13 at 4:00 p.m. and still take place at Jonathan Dayton High School.  The three hour adjustment allows for the game to conclude before sundown when the Yom Kippur holiday begins.

Despite the rainout, spirits were high.  Parents, students, athletes and spectators were full of visible town pride.  Bright orange could be seen all over the campus grounds.  Several groups of athletes young and old were motivated by the new home facility.  Chatter among residents was positive and congratulatory.  There was a palatable excitement and happiness about the field, which one resident described as “Simply beautiful!”  The celebration was postponed but no announcement has been made for when it would take place.  A source indicated that it would likely happen before the next home game.  According to the schedule, that game is Friday, September 20th at 7 p.m. against the Bound Brook High School Crusaders.
