At around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, a small fire broke out in a garbage truck on Caldwell Place near the James Caldwell Elementary School. Public safety agencies quickly responded to the scene. Springfield Police shut down access to Caldwell Place temporarily, while the Springfield Fire Department put out the fire.  The garbage was dumped onto Caldwell Place while Engine 4, on Tour 1, doused the rubbish in flames.  School children out for recess were taken back inside the school during the incident. According to an e-mail from Principal David Rennie, “This was done as a precaution to avoid smoke inhalation. All students and staff are safe.”

The matter was handled in about an hour and after the Department of Public Works assisted with the road cleanup, Caldwell Place was reopened.
