Construction on the nearly $200,000 project that started in the beginning of the summer is wrapping up and significant progress is being reported on the new Senior Citizen Center that was approved last year.  Originally estimated to take three months, it is coming to a close and is expected to open in the beginning of November.

At the September 24th and October 8th Township Committee meetings, Administrator Anthony Cancro explained that several more weeks of work is needed.  Rehabilitation and major construction work for the Senior Citizen wing of the Chisholm building was completed, including a new handicap ramp entrance in the rear.  The railings for the ramp are still outstanding as well as some painting.  Tile work in the bathrooms is finished.  The wait is for the manufacture and delivery of new furniture and kitchen cabinets.  A fireplace is also on order and the last major item to be completed is the flooring.

There have been a few adjustments to the work schedule and a number of recent change orders that caught the attention of the senior citizens.  They have pressed Mayor David Amlen on changes to the scope of the work and for backtracking on promises of expected amenities in the new kitchen that they have grown accustomed to in the current space.  The Springfield senior citizens will then move from their current location at the Sarah Bailey Civic Center.  The next phase of the project, converting the rest of the Chisholm building into a multi-use community space and main office for the Recreation Department, is planned for 2014.  Township officials will also consider the fate of the Sarah Bailey Civic Center which will be vacated after the move.
