Caldwell Place Road Improvement

Caldwell Place Road Improvement

Still reeling from the frustration of months long construction on Hillside Avenue, the community was notified today that Caldwell Place is scheduled to be under construction beginning Monday, October 21st for a period of approximately 30 days depending on weather conditions.  The Township put out an automated telephone call this morning to explain the schedule and plans for the improvement project.  The road was last paved in 1992 according to public records.

The funding for this project comes from a grant the Township receives annually through the New Jersey Department of Transportation.  The Township advertised the project and opened bids on September 18, 2013.  According to Resolution #2013-214 which awarded the contract, “the lowest responsible bidder” was Cifelli & Sons General Construction, Inc.  The cost of the project is $265,352.85

The Township Administrator and Engineer met with school officials to discuss the impact of the project and plan around it.  It was determined that the road will be accessible to the school and local traffic only, except for when the road is milled and paved.  In the call, the township advised that “the road will be open for emergency vehicles at all times.” In an e-mail, James Caldwell School administrators asked parents to use the Keeler Street school entrance when possible and explained that they will be alerted with directions for pick-up and drop-off procedures.

The town instructed the public, “If you have a question or a concern with the work being done by the contractor, please do not discuss it with the contractor’s employees but rather call the Engineering Department at 973-912-2219 and we will be happy to help.”
