A winter storm warning in effect for parts of New York and New Jersey, including Springfield, from 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 2 to 1 p.m. on Friday, January 3 has government officials scrambling to make preparations.  Counties and towns are posting updates to remind everyone about policies in effect to facilitate snow removal and ensure safety.  School officials are deliberating opening plans, but nothing has been announced yet for Springfield Public Schools.  UPDATE:  At 8:30 p.m., an announcement was posted on the Springfield Public Schools Facebook page and website that schools will be closed on Friday due to inclement weather.

Township Administrator Anthony Cancro has already called for a two-hour delayed opening on Friday, January 3rd for all municipal (non-school) buildings.  Instead of an 8 a.m. opening, Town Hall should be open at 10 a.m. unless conditions worsen.  UPDATE:  Shortly after 9:30 p.m., due to a State of Emergency declaration by Governor Chris Christie, Cancro made the decision to close municipal offices altogether for Friday.

Committeeman Ziad Andrew Shehady posted on Facebook that he had been discussing with Cancro what potential changes to plans for Friday garbage collection and Saturday’s rescheduled recycling collection.  Before Town Hall closed for the day on Thursday, an announcement was made indicating Friday garbage collection would resume as scheduled but that recycling on Saturday may be delayed or incomplete.
